The challenge

The presence of H₂S made the salvage operation complex. As soon as the pontoon began to rise towards the surface, the gas could be released. We therefore had to take into account the wind direction, the possibility of the pontoon rotating, and constantly monitor the gas concentrations.

The team worked with compressed air equipment and used environmental detection to ensure safety. These conditions required an exceptionally careful and controlled approach.

Solution and preparations

In the port of Rotterdam, we built a comprehensive framework (skid) on a large Dutch sheerleg barge, complete with diving containers and a LAR system (Launch and Recovery System). This barge was shipped directly to Scotland to be deployed on site.

The diving team travelled overland to Portree, which meant we were able to start work quickly as soon as the crane barge arrived. Thanks to these preparations, the work could be carried out safely without any unnecessary delays.
